HID FARGO HDP5000e ID Card Printer: A Highly Anticipated Upgrade

HID has finally announced the launch of the much-anticipated HID FARGO HDP5000e ID card printer, scheduled for public release on September 18, 2024. This is a much-needed upgrade to the beloved HDP5000 platform, which is arguably the best retransfer printer on the market today due to its reliability, longevity, and price.

Enhanced Features and Performance

Although the HDP5000e may not appear drastically different from its predecessor, still maintaining its original design concept, the real upgrades lie inside. HID has implemented a new electronics platform, allowing for faster print speeds and overall improved performance. They’ve also introduced new color profiles that enable more vibrant prints, giving your ID cards a noticeable increase in color richness and vibrancy compared to the previous generation.

The new printer also boasts a significant upgrade in memory, with 1GB of RAM compared to the 16 megabytes found in the older model, which further enhances printing performance. Additionally, a new and improved driver is available. The FARGO Workbench, a diagnostic tool familiar to most partners, is now built directly into the printer driver, eliminating the need for two separate applications. Overall, the new HID FARGO HDP5000e represents a huge improvement over the last generation.

New Consumables

The new HDP5000e printer is not compatible with the older generation consumables. The HID FARGO HDP5000e will use new ribbons and transfer film with updated part numbers based on the HDP5600 ribbon platform. While the new printer is not compatible with the old ribbons, it's important to note that the new ribbons are compatible with the older generation HDP5000 printers.

Challenges and Considerations

The challenge for distributors now is to clear out all old ribbons and begin stocking the new ribbons to avoid compatibility issues between older generation ribbons and newer generation printers. Additionally, it's worth mentioning that the new printer is currently only available in its base form. Compatibility with add-ons, such as RFID encoders and laminators, is anticipated for rollout in 2025—something to keep in mind before making a purchase.

Conclusion

The HID FARGO HDP5000e is a highly anticipated refresh of the HDP5000 platform. The HDP5000 range has always been a reliable platform and a fan favorite, and we look forward to seeing how this printer develops in the coming years. In the meantime, for anyone looking to upgrade from the older generation printer to the new HDP5000e, pre-orders are now available.

Changing the consumables is definitely something that I wasn’t expecting as the HDP5000 has always had the same ribbons for as long as I can remember. As long as the new ribbons are backward compatible then im sure most people would be happy. Glad to see all the improvements on the HDP5000e.
